Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata conducted its First Adult Live Donor Liver Transplant on July 7. With this, the hospital has reached another milestone in delivering Quaternary Healthcare to people of Eastern India and the region. This was also the first successful liver transplant at a private hospital in eastern India. The state-run SSKM Hospital had carried out a successful liver transplant on a seven-month-old boy last year.
The transplant team of Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals was headed by Dr Mahesh Goenka, Director - Institute of Gastroenterology alongwith reputed transplant surgeon, Dr Subhas Gupta, Senior Consultant, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi.
The recipient was a 47-yrs old male and a resident of Bhutan. He had been diagnosed with End Stage Liver Disease and was under the treatment of Dr Mahesh Goenka for the last 6 years. The patient was suffering from refractory ascites and recently had developed intermittent hepatic coma. The donor was the wife of the recipient. The liver transplant program at the hospital is now set for transplantation with the help from Apollo Hospitals Group’s own team from New Delhi and trained in house transplant surgeons, anesthetists, hepatologists and intensivists; dedicated Liver Transplant Unit and appropriate Laboratory, Blood Bank & Radiology support.
'Both the recipient and donor are stable after surgery, but since this is a critical operation, they need close monitoring and intensive care.' said Dr Mahesh Goenka, Director, Institute of Gastroenterology, Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata. ‘We are hopeful about their recovery'. 'It is great honor for Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata to be the first hospital in the entire eastern region to perform adult living related liver transplantation. This service will open up new vistas for hundreds of patients with end stage liver disease' said Dr Rupali Basu, Chief Executive Officer, Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata - Eastern Region.
